Squirrels have arrived in Birkenhead.

As the home of the Scout Group Birkenhead has always been at the forefront of Scouting. BP opened the very first Scout Group in the World right here and we hosted the Worlds largest ever World Scout Jamboree! So we're delivghted to announce that we have opened our first Squirrel Scouts Drey in the 20th Birkenhead (Birkenhead School).

Kelvin, Group Scout Leader said "It's been great to see the enthusiasm of the Squirrel Scouts! I strongly recommned other Groups seriously investigate the possibilities of starting this section to give more Young People the opportunity to experience Scouting!"

Matt Jones, District Commissioner says "Attending the very first section night a few weeks ago was fabulous. It's a little know fact that I read Early Years at University and so I have a real passion for the Early Years Foundation Stage. It was amazing to see these 4 and 5 year olds getting invovled, enjoying the Great Outdoors and getting stuck in to our amazing programme that will develop thier socail and emotional skills and give them the confidence to succeed in life. One of our youngest Squirrel Scouts even said that she can't wait to sleep in a tent, although she's never slept in one before so isn't sure she will like it, but she thinks she will! It's been great to watch develop over the last few weeks, and I can't wait to see what the future holds for this exciting new section."

What are Squirrels?

Squirrel Scouts has been created by the Scouts for 4 and 5 year olds, building skills and preparing children for moving up to Beavers and beyond. The aim of the provision is to help young people gain skills for life at a time when it matters most and where it is most needed.

Every week, Squirrels will gather to grow and learn their way through lots of different games and activities. The one hour sessions will be a brilliant opportunity for young people to take their first step into being part of Scouts, and they’ll help everyone get ready for the adventure of school too.

Sessions are packed with outdoors activities, fun, games, badges, laughter, and so much more to help our youngest members learn the skills they need for life. As in other Scout sections, Squirrels will work their way through activity badges which they will be awarded upon completion. The badges have been designed as part of an age appropriate program of activities, which encourages community and home learning.

The sessions run every Tuesday, during term time, between 3.45 pm and 4.45 pm in the Outdoor Classroom and are run by Mr Davies, Reception Teacher, and Miss Lavelle and Mrs Workman. Mr Britton and Mrs Hazlehurst, who also run Beavers, Cubs and Scouts at the 20th Birkenhead (Birkenhead School), are supporting as well as Students/Young Leaders from Seniors.

Children are eligible to start Squirrel Scouts after their 4th birthday, until they move up to Beavers, after their 6th birthday. Squirrel Scouts has proved to be extremely popular with 24 Squirrels signed up and a joining list is in operation.
