The Inauguration of Scouting : Dateline : 24th January 1908
Erected at the cost of £9,000 , this building in Grange Road ( see photo left) was opened in 1890, as the headquarters of the Birkenhead Y.M.C.A. which had originally had premises in Conway Street. It was was here that Lord Baden Powell held the inaugural meeting of the Boy Scout Movement on 24th January 1908. Financial problems made it necessary to sell this building
in 1935, and it was purchased by British Home Stores Limited and is now owned by Primark. The Y.M.C.A. then moved to its present position at Whetstone Lane and was the home of the 1st Birkenhead Scout Group for many years until the Group closed. The Webmaster for this site was a member of that Group some 45 years ago. The Scoutmaster at the time was John Dudleston who was also Town Commissioner
